Fugitive Convicted of Extortion in Brazil Detained in Spain

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A 67-year-old man who had fled Brazil and was wanted by Interpol for extortion committed in 2006, was arrested by police in the city of Maliaño, in the Spanish region of Cantabria, as announced yesterday.

The Cantabrian police received an e-mail from Interpol, an international police agency, on June 16th requesting that the fugitive be placed in custody for the purpose of extradition, due to cases in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, in 2006, according to Spanish news agency Efe.

The efforts of the third group of the UDEV-3 (Specialized and Violent Crime Unit), the Judiciary Police’s Provincial Brigade, to locate the fugitive resulted in his arrest two days later at his home in Maliaño, in the Cantabrian municipality of Camargo.

The man, who was convicted of the crime of extortion in Brazil, was arrested and handed over to the Investigation Court in the city of Guardia, in Santander, capital of the Cantabria region, in coordination with Madrid’s Central Investigation Court.
