Four municipalities in Bahia state lead Brazil’s 2022 violence statistics

According to the Brazilian Public Security Forum’s 2022 yearbook, four municipalities in Bahia were at the top of a list of 50 Brazilian cities with the highest incidence of violence.

The list was compiled using data from the Intentional Violent Deaths (IVD) category, representing the total number of victims of violent deaths in a given territory.

These municipalities are Jequié, Santo Antônio de Jesus, Simões Filho, and Camaçari, having respective death rates per 100,000 inhabitants of 88.8, 88.3, 87.4, and 82.1.

The national average was 23.4.

Out of the 50 municipalities listed, 27 are located in the Northeast region, 11 in the North, 6 in the Southeast, 5 in the South, and 1 in the Midwest.

The state of Bahia concentrates six of the ten cities with the highest rates of intentional violent deaths.

Among these, Jequié, with a population of 158,000, had the highest average number of homicides relative to its population.

The increase in violence in these municipalities is attributed to the spread of criminal activity into smaller cities and an escalation in factional disputes.

This situation is especially prevalent in Jequié, where the rise of drug trafficking has sparked disputes among criminal groups.
