Brazil’s BNDES contracts consortium for project to complete Angra 3 nuclear plant

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil’s National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) has signed a contract with the Angra Eurobras NES consortium for structuring the project to restart and complete work on the Angra 3 nuclear power plant in Rio de Janeiro, the development bank announced Tuesday.

The consortium, formed by Tractebel Engineering (lead) and Empresários Agrupados Internacional, is responsible for defining the amount of the investment required to implement the project, the detailed schedule of works, and the specification of how one or more construction companies will be contracted to carry out the work.

Construction of the plant by Eletronuclear, a subsidiary of Eletrobras, which began in 1984, has been interrupted twice, most recently in 2015, when just over 60% of the project had already been completed.

The current plan is for Angra 3 to begin operations in late 2026. The plant can generate more than 10 million MWh per year, enough energy to power about 6 million homes.

Eletronuclear, as well as its subsidiary Itaipu, will no longer be subsidiaries of Eletrobras, which is to be privatized.
