Brazilians Trust Lula More than Bolsonaro, per Datafolha Poll

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A Datafolha survey published on Tuesday, December 10th, by Folha de São Paulo, shows that, while 25 percent of the population always trusts Lula, only 19 percent have the same regard for President  Bolsonaro.

Datafolha had previously shown that 80 percent of Brazilians distrust the current president’s statements and, on Tuesday, said that when it comes to ex-president Lula, this percentage drops to 73 percent.

Today, 19 percent of the population says they always trust Lula’s statements, 36 percent of them occasionally do, 37 percent never do, and two percent say they do not know. The indices reported for Bolsonaro were 19 percent, 37 percent, 43 percent, and one percent, respectively.

The survey also shows a change in people’s feelings about Lula’s conviction. Today, 54 percent of Datafolha respondents considered the ex-president’s release fair, after he was freed from prison in Curitiba after the Federal Supreme Court changed its position on imprisonment before all appeals are exhausted.

In April, however, the same 54 percent had said Lula’s conviction was fair. In October, 51 percent said he should remain in jail.

Support for the former president comes mainly from Brazil’s Northeast, where 71 percent said his release was fair. The ex-president still enjoys good approval among 16-24-year-olds and Brazilians who have attended elementary school.

The Datafolha survey interviewed 2,948 people in 176 municipalities last week. The margin of error is two percentage points plus or minus.
