Of these cases, 184 correspond to the P.1 variant first detected in Brazil, and 20 to the variant first reported in the United Kingdom, the SVS said.

Coronavirus variants are mutations of the virus, which have shown to be more contagious. To date, Brazil has not seen cases of another variant first discovered in South Africa.

So far, 10,257,875 people in Brazil have tested positive for COVID-19 since the first case was detected in late February 2020, and 248,529 people have died from the disease.
