Brazil Records 200 Coronavirus Cases by Sunday, March 15th

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Ministry of Health reported on Saturday, March 14th, that the number of confirmed cases of the Covid-19 in Brazil rose from 98 to 121. According to figures updated Sunday afternoon, the number of cases has risen to 200, and 1,913 people are being monitored for suspected new coronavirus infections.

The confirmed cases in Brazil are present in 15 states: São Paulo (136) and Rio de Janeiro (24) have almost three quarters of all confirmed cases. Among the suspected cases, only Amazonas has no cases.

The states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have already reported cases of “community transmission” of the coronavirus. This type of transmission occurs when surveillance teams are no longer able to map the chain of infection, unable to determine who was the first patient responsible for the infection of others.

However, most are still imported cases (people contaminated abroad) and local transmission (through contact with people with imported cases).

Last Wednesday, March 11th, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a coronavirus pandemic. The term is used when an epidemic – a major outbreak affecting a region – spreads across different continents with sustained person-to-person transmission.

Currently, there are more than 135 countries with confirmed cases of infection.
