Brazil: Minister of Justice insists on creating a National Guard as early as 2023; parliamentarians oppose it

In a recent speech, the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, again emphasized his interest in creating a National Guard still in 2023.

This action, however, needs the approval of a PEC (Proposal of Constitutional Amendment) by the National Congress.

The planning of the National Guard aims to protect federal public buildings in Brasília, as well as to act in special operations in indigenous lands, borders, and conservation units, and also to support public security in the states that need this support.

Despite the probable creation of the National Guard, there is no intention of federalizing the security forces of the Federal District, which, so far, are subordinated to the District Government.

According to the newspaper Folha Dirigida, nothing has yet been said about the selection process or how to join the future National Guard in case its creation is approved.

What is known is that the end of the National Security Force, which has been in operation since 2004, is already being considered.

Some parliamentarians have expressed themselves against the creation of the National Guard, especially because of the existence of security forces that already act in what it is believed that the PEC is likely to propose, as is the case of the Armed Forces, the police, and other agencies.
