RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – One of the countries most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in the world, Brazil has lost ground in the fight for gender equality in the region.
The pandemic of Covid-19 will delay by more than a generation the time needed to achieve parity between men and women, according to the Global Gender Inequality Index published today by the World Economic Forum.
Brazil fell one position, to 93rd out of 156 countries, and appears as the second-worst in gender inequality in Latin America. In comparison, Mexico is in 34th and Argentina in 36th.
According to the report, the estimate now is that it will take 135.6 years, compared to 99.5 years before, to achieve gender equality in the world. It means 36 years more. In Latin America, where Brazil has decisive weight, the projection is that, at the current pace, it will take 68.9 years for the country to achieve gender equality.
