Brazil fails to comply with ruling in Herzog case, Inter-American Court says

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) issued a resolution in late April stating that the Brazilian state has made no progress in complying with its March 2018 ruling requiring the country to investigate, charge and punish those responsible for the death of journalist Vladimir Herzog at the hands of the military dictatorship.

Herzog was tortured and murdered in a cell in São Paulo in October 1975. In 2018, the international court determined that the crimes against the journalist were also crimes against humanity.

Among the ruling points that have not yet been fulfilled are the adoption of measures to ensure that crimes against humanity in the country are not subject to a statute of limitations, and the reopening of the investigation into the case.

The IACHR complied with Herzog’s family’s request and convened a public hearing for the June 24th to monitor the measures required by the international court’s decision.
