Brazil produces 15% of the chicken meat consumed on the planet

In 2023, Brazil is set to produce 15 million tons of chicken meat, accounting for nearly 15% of the world’s total supply, which stands at 103 million tons for the year.

These figures were highlighted by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein and are based on United States Department of Agriculture estimates.

While the U.S. tops the list in chicken production, Brazil reigns supreme in exports.

The nation is forecasted to ship a record 5.2 million tons abroad in 2023, dwarfing the U.S.’s expected 3.3 million tons – a difference of almost 40%.

Brazil exported 3 million tons from January to July, amassing a revenue of US$6 billion. If trends hold, the 2023 revenue could reach US$10 billion.

In terms of domestic contributions, the state of Paraná is pivotal, contributing around 20% of the nation’s chicken exports from January to July.

China remains the primary importer of Brazilian chicken, acquiring 15% of the exports.

Notably, the combined purchases of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates match China’s, underscoring the significance of the halal market – a term denoting food permissible in Islam.

Chicken is a favored halal protein source due to its affordability.

While being a global export leader, most of Brazil’s chicken production feeds its own populace.

In 2023, Brazilians are expected to consume 65% of their national output, equating to about 50 kilograms of chicken per citizen.
