Best Brazilian States for Electric Cars

Electric cars are gaining popularity in Brazil, though growth varies by state, with some areas providing more support than others.

Currently, Brazil has about 500 public charging spots. This number falls short of growing needs.

Via Dutra, a highway connecting Rio and São Paulo, stands out. It offers ten charging points along its path.

In terms of tax incentives, São Paulo’s Legislative Assembly approved a bill to reduce the IPVA for owners of electric, hybrid, or hydrogen vehicles.

Subsequently, nine other states and the Federal District, including

  • Maranhão,
  • Ceará,
  • Rio Grande do Norte,
  • Pernambuco,
  • Alagoas,
  • Rio de Janeiro,
  • Belo Horizonte,
  • Paraná, and
  • Rio Grande do Sul,

followed suit.

Because of this and the growing charging spots, São Paulo leads as the best state for electric cars.

From June to August 2022, São Paulo saw an 11.25% rise in its charging spots.

The Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association Abve reports that 175,500 electric cars have sold in Brazil since 2012.

They estimate that nearly 40% of these are in São Paulo. However, not all regions are moving at the same pace.

Those lacking in tax incentives and charging spots risk falling behind.

Sales of light electric vehicles have seen a big jump over the years:

2012: 100
2020: 35,000
2021: 49,300
2023: 49,000 (estimated)

Background

This growth in electric car adoption isn’t new. Tech giants like Apple and Tesla have also shown interest in this market.

Such cases often question a company’s power and impact on competition. In the past, issues like these led to big changes in company policies.

If São Paulo continues to lead, it may set an example for other states. It can also send a signal to car makers to invest more in electric vehicles.

This is a crucial time for Brazil’s transport sector, showing that steps are being taken towards a greener future.
