RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Prince Harry, who has been in Rio de Janeiro representing his Grandmother, Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee celebration, after a morning of sport on Flamengo beach went on a visit to the Complexo do Alemão (German) favela community in Zona Norte (North Zone).
The Prince walked through Complexo do Alemão, which has been pacified since 2010, shaking hands with residents who lined the streets calling his name.
After watching a cricket match between the children in the community, Prince Harry made a special visit to a family clinic named Zilda Arns where he was treated to a vocal performance by children ranging from four to fifteen years old.
The song, titled ‘Toda criança quer’ (every child wants), describes the sometimes harsh reality of life in the favela.
Earlier during the day, Prince Harry attended the ‘GREAT sports day’ event at the Aterro do Flamengo (Flamengo Park), courtesy of the British Consulate of Rio de Janeiro. He took part in a sports relief charity run before playing a Rugby match with the local team, the Rio Rugby Club.
During his press speech on Friday night, the Prince joked “If we show you how to play rugby, don’t do what you’ve done with football and leave us wishing that we hadn’t!”
Despite increasing temperatures, the activities didn’t end there; the Prince was given a special lesson in beach volleyball courtesy of Olympic medalist Adriana Behar and her team mates. All the while Harry proudly sported a customized version of the new Brazilian football shirt, stamped with his name.
The Prince, who has been visiting various South American cities as part of the Royal tour, is currently in São Paulo completing the Brazilian leg of the journey. It is hoped that the Prince’s presence in Brazil will help to improve trade relations with the UK.
