Over 53,000 individuals homeless in South America’s largest city, São Paulo

In São Paulo, the most populous city in South America, 53,188 individuals live on the streets, as per the Brazilian government’s Unified Registry of Social Programs, which was made public by the local media yesterday, Friday.

Official statistics show a 1.8 percent increase in the number of homeless individuals in Brazil’s economic heart and principal financial and industrial hub of South America between February and March.

The data, revealed by the Globo news network, follows the Court of Auditors’ demand for the São Paulo City Hall to devise a support plan for those in extreme social vulnerability, who are living under bridges, in parks, and on the streets.

The state of São Paulo, Brazil’s most populous and developed region with 46 million residents, has a homeless population of 88,415.

The Ministry of Social Development’s registry indicates racial disparity in Brazil’s homeless population, with seven out of ten individuals being of African descent.

The São Paulo City Hall has stated that it can house 24,000 individuals within the social assistance system.
