JBS, Brazilian meat titan, invests in world’s largest lab-grown meat facility in Spain

JBS SA, the global leader in beef production, has announced plans to construct the world’s largest facility for lab-grown meat in Spain.

With an estimated production capacity of 1,000 metric tons of lab-grown meat per year, and the potential to increase this output to 4,000 tons, the company revealed its plan on Wednesday through an email communique.

The plant will be established in San Sebastian, an eastern city near Bilbao. It is the property of BioTech Foods, a cultured meat production company in which JBS holds a 51% stake.

JBS has committed a US$41 million investment to the Spanish plant, which is scheduled to be operational by next year.

Furthermore, the company intends to invest an additional US$60 million in the development of a research center in southern Brazil.

This center will focus on advancing protein processing technology derived from animal cells.
