Brazil will probably soon have its public Lula TV

Brazilian President Lula da Silva appears to be quietly aiming to build a state TV propaganda apparatus.

His Workers’ Party (PT) in Brazil has formally submitted an application to the Ministry of Communications seeking a concession for public television and radio broadcasting channels.

Party president and deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PT-PR) and the party’s national secretary of communication, deputy Jilmar Tatto (PT-SP), signed the request.

The approval for the concession must come from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In the rationale behind the request, Tatto underscored the “magnitude” of PT and described it as “the largest left-wing political party in Latin America”.

He believes the concession will assist in disseminating the party’s ideologies and initiatives.

The application stresses the importance of enhancing transparency with the public and bolstering the political education of Brazilian citizens.

The PT acknowledges the novelty of this proposal, given that no other political party currently possesses a public concession to operate a television channel.

Based on a survey conducted by the PT, there are 49 available channels in the country that the Ministry of Communications could potentially grant.

Gleisi stated that this decision would allow the party to broaden its networks and “deliver information with credibility, fostering public engagement and political education.”

She maintains that the party has fulfilled all the constitutional prerequisites required for a public media concession.
