Brazil: vehicle production grows 27.4% in May – Anfavea

The production of motor vehicles (cars, light commercials, trucks, and buses) grew 27.4% in May 2023 compared to April, according to data released by Anfavea (National Association of Motor Vehicles Manufacturers) on Tuesday (6).

The Vice President and Minister of Industry and Commerce, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), attended the event and talked about the provisional measure 1.175/23, published this Tuesday morning (6), which creates the program aimed at cheapening trucks, buses, and popular cars.

“We are very optimistic with the response of consumers, with the preservation of jobs, and with the strengthening of the industry,” said Alckmin.

According to him, the program is “intelligent” because it includes light vehicles and considers social, environmental, and industrial density issues.

According to Márcio Lima Leite, president of Anfavea, the expectation created by the approval of this MP was one of the reasons for the production growth in May, along with the return of the paralyzed plants and the 4 additional working days in the month.

In numbers, 227,900 vehicles were produced in May.

Compared to the same month in 2022, this year’s production was up 10.7%.

Licensing and exports of this category also registered an increase of 9.8% and 30.4%, respectively, between April and May.

Last month, 176,500 vehicles were licensed, and 44,300 were exported.

The increase in this segment also occurred compared to January – May 2022, with a 6.2% higher production.

In the same period, the licensing presented an increase (9.3%).

On the other hand, exports decreased in this time interval, with a reduction of 4.2%.

Concerning the car industry, the growth in May was significant compared to April: a high of 27.3% in production and 27.1% in exports.

Licensing also grew in the period, but more moderately, with an increase of 7.9%.

The highlight is the increase in bus licensing, which grew 61.7% from January to May 2023 compared to last year.

DISCOUNT PROGRAM

The MP 1,175, which creates the vehicle discount program, was published in this Tuesday’s edition (6) of the DOU (Federal Official Gazette).

In his speech during the event, Alckmin said that the measure, through the counterparts to receive the benefits, has as one of its goals the renewal of the fleet of old trucks and buses that “pollute more” and have “safety and mobility problems”.

The federal government announced, on May 25, discounts of up to 10.96% for popular cars up to R$120,000.

On Monday (June 5), the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT), said that the program had been “revamped” and would be focused on cargo transport (trucks) and collective transport (buses).
