BRICS success awakens interest of other countries to join the bloc, says Brazilian foreign minister

The success of BRICS, the emerging markets bloc grouping Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has awakened the interest of other countries to join the bloc, something that is being analyzed, according to Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira yesterday.

“Perhaps because of this great success of BRICS, the group caught the attention of many other countries in 15 years. We are working on this issue of the bloc’s expansion,” Vieira said from Cape Town, where he is participating in a meeting with BRICS foreign ministers.

Currently, the bloc has more than a dozen “friendly countries” that could join the group in the future.

The Brazilian Foreign Minister stressed that the new Brazilian government “is fully committed to strengthening our relationship with BRICS, which is an indispensable mechanism for the construction of a multipolar world order that reflects the voices and needs of developing countries”.

He also commented that Brazil “is resuming the South-South dimension in our foreign policy. It is our goal to strengthen partnerships with friends of the global south.”

Vieira called the bloc’s foreign ministers’ meeting, a preview of next August’s BRICS summit in South Africa, “of great importance and a political statement in itself.”
