Brazil: demonstrators invade senator’s family farm

By Anderson Scardoelli

A group of eight people invaded, this Sunday morning, 30, the Santa Eliza Farm.

Located in the municipality of Terenos (MS), the farm belongs to Senator Tereza Cristina’s (PP-MS) family.

According to the Campo Grande News website, the parliamentarian, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock in Jair Bolsonaro’s government, confirmed the invasion but said that the protesters were expelled from the site on Sunday morning.

“The police were called and were very agile,” Tereza said.

“Everyone was removed peacefully,” added the senator when she pointed out that there was no violence against the land invaders, who identified themselves as members of the Acampamento Fênix – which is not part of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST).

Despite having no official relation with the MST, Tereza Cristina’s family lawyer, Brenner Lucas Dietrich Espíndola, claimed that the invaders did signal a connection with the movement.

“They entered the legal reserve area of the property and planted an MST flag there,” said Espíndola, according to the website of the newspaper Correio do Estado.

In a statement, the South Mato Grosso section of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB-MS) recalled that the Federal Constitution guarantees property right.

Thus, the entity repudiated the act of invading lands and informed that it would follow the case’s developments involving the Terenos farm.

“The OAB-MS defends constitutional rights and guarantees, especially the right to property guaranteed in Article 5, XXII,” informs the entity.

“Respect for the property right will always be a beacon for the institution, an insurmountable barrier for a State that claims to be a State of Law.”

The invasion of Tereza Cristina’s family farm comes days after the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), authorized the installation of the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) dedicated to finding out who are the financial backers of the MST and other land invasion groups.

A member of the Agriculture and Livestock Parliamentary Front, the senator favors the CPI.
