Brasília and Moscow discuss increasing Brazilian purchases of Russian fertilizers

The governments of Brazil and Russia discussed today, Monday, how the South American country can increase purchases of Russian fertilizer, essential for Brazilian agriculture, official sources said.

“Russia supplies about a quarter of the fertilizers imported by Brazil. I discussed with (Russian Foreign Minister Sergey) Lavrov measures to guarantee the flow of this input of vital importance for our agriculture,” said Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira after meeting in Brasilia with his Russian counterpart.

Russian fertilizers are vital for agriculture in Brazil, one of the world’s largest food producers and exporters.

The two ministers also discussed an increase in Russian purchases of Brazilian meat.

“We also expressed our expectation to increase the number of Brazilian establishments authorized to export animal products to Russia,” Vieira added.

The Brazilian foreign minister said he also discussed bilateral and international issues with his Russian counterpart.

In a statement after the meeting, the Russian foreign minister said that the two countries would strive to expand collaboration in energy, especially in nuclear power, for peaceful purposes.

Lavrov, who arrived today on an official visit to Brazil, said that the two countries reaffirm constructive cooperation, which, he remarked, does not depend on changes in the international situation.
