Five parties formalize the largest bloc in the Brazilian House with 142 deputies

By Diógenes Freire

With 142 seats in the House of Representatives, the MDB, PSD, Republicans, Podemos, and PSC parties have formalized the largest bloc in the House.

The bloc surpasses the intention of the president of the House, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), to unite his party and União Brasil, which would result in a coalition of 108 deputies.

The largest bloc in the House brings together parties allied to the Lula government and parties that have signaled their opposition or declared independence.

At first, 15 parties tried to form a party federation, a model in which the member parties must remain united for at least four years.

The problem is that parties like the Union and the PP had participated in the so-called “Bloc” to support the reelection of Lira, and, according to the rules of the House, they cannot join another bloc until next year.

The division of forces has made Lira unfold to seek support in the new bloc in the House. Last Wednesday (29), the same day as the announcement made by the five parties, Lira sought leaders of the bloc to congratulate them for the initiative.

“I have always defended unity to reduce the number of parties, strengthening them and giving society confidence in our party system. This way, we reaffirm our commitment to democracy and the Brazilian parliament,” Lira wrote on Twitter after the meeting.
