Córdoba, Rosario or Buenos Aires? In which city does poverty hit the hardest in Argentina?

INDEC released the official statistics of poverty in Argentina this Thursday during the second semester of 2022.

According to the report, the scourge of insufficient income increased by three percentage points compared to the first semester, with 11.5 million Argentines below the poverty line.

Among the three largest cities in the country, Rosario had the lowest number of poor inhabitants, while Córdoba and Buenos Aires reported the same percentage.

31.1% of Argentines are non-indigent poor (9.1 million people), while 8.1% are indigent (2.4 million).

54.2% of Argentine children between 0 and 14 are impoverished.

HOW MUCH DOES POVERTY HIT GREATER ROSARIO?

According to INDEC’s Permanent Household Survey, 33.2% of Rosarinos and 24.6% of households in that city and its conurbation were below the poverty line at the end of 2022.

Thus, Rosario was the largest city in Argentina to show a poverty level below the national average.

On the other hand, indigence in Rosario affected 6.3% of individuals.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN BUENOS AIRES AND CORDOBA?

Greater Buenos Aires and Greater Cordoba, including their namesake cities, recorded poverty in the second half of last year, impacting 39.5%, above the national average of 39.2%.

As for households in each district, poverty was present in 30.2% and 28.2%, respectively.

Meanwhile, 16.1% of the inhabitants of the City of Buenos Aires, the second largest district in the country after the Province of Buenos Aires, were affected by poverty during the period. It affected 11.3% of households.
