Bolivia: Santa Cruz Governor Camacho asks IACHR to investigate President Arce

The governor of the department of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, one of the leading opposition figures to the president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, has asked the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to investigate the repression exercised against the “cruceño” people by the ruling Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) during the 2019 protests.

“The most important request I made to the commissioners of the IACHR is that a new Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (GIEI) be formed to investigate the brutal repressions carried out by the Police against the people of Santa Cruz,” he indicated in a written message.

Camacho, held in the Chonchocoro prison in La Paz, said that “the people need justice” since the jails are full of “politically persecuted people”.

“I will not stop fighting because we are the hope for better days for our country”, he has sentenced in the text, published in his Twitter profile.

Camacho, who is historically opposed to MAS governments, is the governor of the wealthiest region of Bolivia.

Santa Cruz was the scene of protests in December and January last year to fight the census law.
