Without Lula, signing of Brazil-China agreements will be postponed

The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Favaro, said on Sunday (26) that the signing of agreements between Brazil and China that were scheduled to take place during the visit of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT, progressive-globalist) is postponed.

The 77-year-old president decided to cancel the trip to treat pneumonia.

For him, however, the postponement does not affect the progress of negotiations or the implementation of partnerships.

The two countries had prepared about 20 agreements in various sectors, such as the launch of CBERS-6, a satellite capable of monitoring forests even with the significant presence of clouds, and the bilateral mechanism for environmental and sustainable cooperation.

The only member of the first level of the government to go to Beijing, Favaro talked to journalists at the Brazilian Embassy in the Chinese capital.

He celebrated the fact that he organized the trip with business people from the agriculture and cattle-raising sector before the expected arrival of Lula.

“We had an important gain in this mission, which was having the Ministry of Agriculture anticipate us, mainly to finalize the case, because it is a technical issue, not an agreement,” he said about the resumption of imports of Brazilian beef by the Chinese, announced by China after a meeting with the minister.

“Setbacks happen as they did. Imagine if we had not anticipated finishing this process so that it would become a big announcement with the president’s arrival. This implies a lot in Brazilian trade relations”, he said.

According to the minister, new private partnerships between Brazilian and Chinese companies should be announced on Wednesday (29).
