Brazil: Ibovespa closes at the worst level in 9 months

On Wednesday, 22, the Ibovespa closed with a retraction of 0.8%.

The level stood at just over 100,000 points.

It is the worst mark for closing a trading session since the end of July 2022.

At the same time, the dollar also ended the day down, at R$5.24.

The main index of the Brazilian market, Ibovespa is formed with a basket that includes the best shares of the Brazilian Stock Exchange.

Since Lula was elected for a third term in October 2022, the indicator has already lost 13% of its value.

Throughout the year, the drop is almost 9%.

The reduction in the indicator’s value occurs in line with President Lula’s attacks on the monetary policy adopted with autonomy by the Central Bank (BC).

On Tuesday, 21, the President again criticized Roberto Campos Neto, responsible for the organ.

Also, yesterday, he postponed presenting the federal government’s proposal for a new fiscal framework in Brazil.

The market is waiting for the project to evaluate how the current management intends to do in the face of increased expenses.

After the market closed today, the Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee announced the maintenance of the economy’s basic interest rate, the Selic, at 13.75%.

Thus, it was the fifth group meeting without changing the value.

In addition, the interest rate increase in the US economy announced today contributed to Ibovespa’s fall in Wednesday’s trading session.

The Federal Reserve (Fed) raised the rate from 4.5% to 5% in the wake of the banking crisis, marked by the bankruptcy of Silicon Valley Bank.
