Lollapalooza 2023: trivia about the festival’s history

Lollapalooza Brazil takes place this week between Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 24, 25, and 26 March 2023.

WHERE DOES THE NAME LOLLAPALOOZA COME FROM, AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

The name’s origin is explained by Perry Farrell, lead singer of Jane’s Addiction and creator of the event.

“I was lying on the carpet reading the dictionary and came across this word: ‘Lollapalooza. Something and/or someone exceptional or wonderful. And, number two, a giant spiral lollipop.'”

WHEN DID THE 1ST EDITION OF THE LOLLAPALOOZA FESTIVAL TAKE PLACE?

Lollapalooza started in the United States in 1991.

The idea was to bring together alternative music groups in a series of concerts in the United States between July and August of that year through the initiative of the band Jane’s Addiction.

Lollapalooza’s debut in Brazil occurred in 2012, with shows between April 7 and 8.

AN ‘UNKNOWN’ LADY GAGA

On August 4, 2007, before she burst onto the radio with her hit Just Dance and became a worldwide music phenomenon, Lady Gaga performed a short-lived concert at the festival in Chicago.

Besides the United States, the festival’s birthplace, and Brazil, there have also been Lollapalooza editions in the following countries: Germany, France, Sweden, Argentina, and Chile.

In 2012, the festival featured Foo Fighters, Calvin Harris, Joan Jett, Arctic Monkeys, and Skrillex.

In 2013, The Killers, Cake, Queens Of The Stone Age, Franz Ferdinand, Major Lazer, and Pearl Jam.

In 2014, Imagine Dragons, Arcade Fire, Pixies, New Order, Ellie Goulding, and Muse.

In 2015, Jack White (of the White Stripes), Robert Plant, Bastille, Smashing Pumpkins, Calvin Harris, and Pharrell Williams.

In 2016, Florence & The Machine, Noel Gallagher, Mumford & Sons, and Eminem.

In 2017, The Strokes, Marshmello, The Weeknd, and Metallica.

In 2018, Wiz Khalifa, Lana Del Rey, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

In 2019, Post Malone, Twenty One Pilots, Kendrick Lamar, and Sam Smith.

In 2022, Miley Cyrus, A$AP Rocky, Alessia Cara.

Some of the artists mentioned have performed in more than one festival edition, featuring dozens of other international and national names in each edition.
