Former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez banned from leaving the country

The Peruvian Judiciary has issued this Thursday a 15-day prohibition to leave the country against former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, investigated for alleged crimes of rebellion and conspiracy in the framework of the maneuver of former President Pedro Castillo for trying to dissolve the Congress and establish a government of exception.

The judicial resolution, signed by Supreme Judge Juan Carlos Checkley, has thus declared the Congress’ petition well founded, only three days after rejecting another measure due to errors in the form of the petition, as reported by RPP.

The Permanent Commission of Congress agreed last Friday, at the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, to request this measure against Chavez to prevent her from leaving the country while she is under investigation.

At the beginning of March, unpublished images showed Castillo colluding with Chávez in the moments before the former President’s speech in which he announced the measures above, which, finally, were not supported and resulted in his arrest.

After the arrest of the former President, Castillo’s then ‘number two’, Dina Boluarte, ascended to the Presidency.

At the same time, social sectors related to Castillo took to the streets to stage protests demanding the exit of Boluarte and the calling of new elections.
