Brazilians recover US$52.64 million from ‘forgotten’ bank accounts

Brazilian account holders have already recovered nearly R$275 million (US$52.64) through the Central Bank’s System of Receivables (SRV) reopening in 2023.

The monetary authority released the balance this Monday, 13.

The sum involves withdrawals since the platform returned to operation on March 7.

In 2023, the highest individual withdrawal made by a Brazilian account holder in SVR reached R$749,000 (US$143,400), according to the Central Bank.

The withdrawal occurred on Wednesday 8th.

With this amount, it would be possible to buy, for example, a BMW X6, imported from the United States, and receive around US$3,830 in change.

The monetary authority estimates that almost 40 million Brazilians have money forgotten in bank accounts.

Considering only individuals, the amount reaches R$6 billion; R$2 million remain in companies’ names.

For this reason, the institution has created SVR, which allows the consultation and reimbursement of the amounts.

The system went into operation for the first time in February 2022.

At that time, queries could be made according to a calendar based on users’ date of birth or company foundation.

This year, SRV comes with some improvements.

The platform now includes closed pre-payment or post-payment accounts, closed registration accounts held by brokers and dealers, and other resources available at institutions for return.
