Brazil: fire in Santa Catarina state hits chemical industry and releases toxic smoke

According to the state Fire Department, a fire has hit a chemical industry in the municipality of Xanxerê, in western Santa Catarina.

At the moment, firefighters are working to control the flames in what has been described as a fire of “large proportions.”

Responsible for commanding the operation at the site, Major Rangel Kehl warned the population to avoid transit in the fire area due to the presence of toxic smoke resulting from the burning of chemicals used in the industry.

The fire was described as of “large proportions” by the firefighters.

Because of the smoke, the Civil Defense advised residents to close their windows.

Videos circulating on social networks show the fire at the site.




According to the agency, the fire department teams were called at 11:32 am to attend to the occurrence in a “commercial building” in the industrial zone of Xanxerê.

VICTIMS

According to the fire department, there is still no confirmation of victims nor the chemical substances combusted.
