Lula invites Uruguayan president to G20 summit in Brazil

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva has invited Uruguay’s conservative President Luis Lacalle Pou, in a nod to the international right, to accompany him to the G20 summit that Brazil will host in 2024. The information was reported by Agencia EFE.

Uruguayan Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo made the statement Wednesday at a press conference a few hours after returning from Brasilia, where he met with Brazilian Chancellor Mauro Vieira.

“This is a clear demonstration of Brazil’s perception of what Uruguay is and the importance that Uruguay is beginning to acquire today on the international scene,” Bustillo said.

At the meeting on Tuesday, the parties discussed Mercosur, the modernization of the bloc, and the “challenge” of finalizing the agreement with the European Union (EU).

“Brazil has put it under their arm and sees us walking alongside them in favor of this agreement,” the minister emphasized.

In January this year, President Lula traveled to Uruguay to demonstrate that he does not intend to ignore right-wing leaders in his international relations, as the Planalto’s advisory office pointed out.
