Highway release on São Paulo’s northern coast should take two months

São Paulo State Secretary of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics, Natália Resende, informed that the liberation of the Mogi-Bertioga road on the northern coast of São Paulo (SP) would occur in two months.

The work started on Tuesday (21), costing almost R$10 million (US$1.93 million).

The highway is blocked in both directions, between kilometers 77, in Mogi das Cruzes, and 98, already in Bertioga.

The road is one of the connections between the metropolitan region of São Paulo and the coast.

“We are engaged in collective work to circumvent the situation,” said Natalia.

“It was a very strong, atypical rainfall, the heaviest ever recorded in the country, with 600 millimeters in 24 hours. On the Mogi-Bertioga, it will take two months of work to clear the road partially and up to six months to completely clear it because we will build a new retaining wall, reinforce the existing retaining wall and create a new drainage system.”

The work includes total roadway recovery, a retaining wall, and a new drainage system. According to the Department of Highways (DER), the highway’s rain gallery could not cope with the rain and broke, damaging the asphalt.

The DER guided drivers to move by the highways of the Imigrantes/Anchieta System (SP-160 and SP-150) to leave the northern coast of SP.
