Resumption of rail service on the line to Machu Picchu

After over a week of rail service interruption, Peru Rail and Ferrocarril Trasandino resumed operations on the line to Machu Picchu.

Peru Rail has announced that all mixed cars will be available on Wednesdays and Sundays beginning February 8. Domestic, foreign, and local tourists can use the trains.

The Ferrocarril Transandino (FETRANSA) railroad company also announced the resumption of its activities from Tuesday, February 7, on the Pachar – Ollantaytambo – Machu Picchu and Hidroeléctrica section.

Direct departures from Cusco to Machu Picchu will continue to be suspended due to the rainy season.

The decision to reopen stems from complaints and petitions from the citizens of this district, who had complained that they were not being served and were on the verge of being inundated with garbage.

The interruption of activities was taken as a security measure in the face of constant blockades and damage to the railroad line.

The neighborhood was without basic food for almost two weeks, and tons of garbage could not be taken to Ollantaytambo, where the landfill is located.

Despite having declared an indefinite strike against the government of Dina Boluarte, the villagers asked both companies for a humanitarian pass.
