Public employees protest salary improvements in Venezuela

Workers from public education and other sectors of the State have demonstrated this Monday and for the third consecutive week to demand decent wages in various cities of Venezuela.

In Caracas, the protesters have marched to the headquarters of the Prosecutor’s Office and the mobilizations have been reproduced in other states such as Mérida, Táchira, Trujillo, Zulia, Lara, Anzoátegui, Portuguesa, Apure, La Guaira, Amazonas, Nueva Esparta, Guárico and Monagas.

“With hunger and misery there is no education”, have been some of the slogans of the teachers during the demonstration.

Retirees and pensioners have also participated in the mobilization to demand compensation that guarantees them a decent old age, in which they can acquire everything they need to live comfortably: food, medicine, shoes and clothing.

Thus, pensioners have denounced that the Bs.130 (US$6.06) are not even enough to buy a kilo of meat or cheese.

“We worked for many years and now we have to beg on the street for that paltry salary that is not enough for anything. I can’t buy my medicines, and I’m sick. I haven’t eaten, but I’m still going out to march,” María Nieves declared.

Other organizations raise three demands: salaries indexed to the dollar rate, medical and funeral insurance, and repeal of the instructions of the National Budget Office (ONAPRE).

The demonstration in Caracas was carried out under a significant deployment of the repressive forces of Chavism.
