Uruguay predicts a good tourist season

Tour operators, hoteliers and analysts see good signs for the ongoing tourism season in Uruguay, especially for sun and beach tourism.

The first Argentine, Brazilian and local tourists are already arriving in Punta del Este and other seaside resorts, along with cruise ships that brought in more than 6,000 cruisers in the last week alone.

Traditionally, the flow of foreign visitors to Maldonado’s beaches increases after the Christmas holidays. Two summers marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, with sanitary restrictions and border closures that negatively impacted the tourism industry, are now behind the population.

The Economic Research Center predicts that around 890,000 Argentines will visit the country from December 2022 to March 2023. Around 200,000 Brazilians are also expected during this period.

Tourism Minister Tabaré Viera expects a season of around three million tourists, which would mean a post-pandemic recovery. According to him, the smallest Spanish-speaking country in Latin America received around 3,800,000 tourists in 2017, a record that is currently difficult to achieve, partly because of the loss of flight connections.
