Distrustful of the Brazilian military, Lula da Silva will have Federal Police security

The security of the president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), will be the responsibility of the Federal Police (PF) at the beginning of his administration in 2023.

He does not feel safe with the military personnel assigned to the Institutional Security Cabinet (GSI) of the Presidency.

The measure empties the ministry responsible for the mission.

The decision is provisional, and Lula da Silva’s allies say it is necessary to maintain presidential security with the Federal Police in the face of extreme political polarization.

The leaders of the PT and ministers appointed by the party allege there is some fear that the GSI has been taken over by allies of President Bolsonaro, which would impose a risk to the president’s security.

Rui Costa (PT), the future Minister of the Civil House, has been dealing with the issue with members of the GSI and federal police officers, such as the future director-general of the corporation, Delegate Andrei Passos, responsible for Lula’s security during the campaign.

Costa wants to prepare a proposal to restructure the attributions of the GSI and maintain, within the Federal Police, a department for the personal protection of the president, the vice president, and their families.

Earlier this week, the future Justice Minister said there would be a “transition structure” for Lula da Silva’s security until the GSI is fully defined.

The new GSI team will be under the responsibility of General Gonçalves Dias, who was responsible for Lula da Silva’s security during his first two terms.
