Mexico: “AMLO should be tried by the International Criminal Court”

By Raul Tortolero

Porfirio Muñoz Ledo was one of the founders of Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s (AMLO) party, the so-called National Regeneration Movement (Morena), and has held important positions in public service inside and outside Mexico for decades.

Octogenarian lawyer, seasoned in a thousand political battles, promoter of the transition to democracy and the reform of the State, former president of the Chamber of Deputies, is one of the greatest experts in constitutional matters, and has been disassociating himself from power and in of AMLO, for which reason he can now be considered one of his main opponents.

This Sunday, December 11, he tweeted:

“COUP D’ETAT IN MEXICO. AMLO’s electoral initiative means a coup against our constitutional regime. The Senate should not approve it and the president should be prosecuted before the International Criminal Court. We have the right to rebel against oppression.”

However, he has revealed that AMLO’s electoral “plan b” is being approved by the Senate.

Plan A was a kind of constitutional reform that took away autonomy and funding from the National Electoral Institute (INE), and that tried to control the elections from the Federal Government, centralizing all the processes again, as in the 80s, which precisely gave foot to massive citizen complaints, and the subsequent birth of the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), the antecedent of the current INE, so attacked by AMLO.

Muñoz Ledo, after the march of 700,000 citizens on November 13, posted on his Twitter account:

“Let López Obrador resign. Mexican citizens have decided to defend the INE and resume the democratic transition. The president reacted with inconsistencies and exorbitant insults revealing serious psychological disturbances. He must resign according to article 86 of the Constitution. We are going to demand it all and everywhere.”

For this now opponent, AMLO is simply not well with his mental faculties. A few days ago Muñoz Ledo was also at the International Book Fair (FIL), where he participated in a forum named: “Democracy and Populism”, and described AMLO as a “coward” for “sowing fear” during his administration.

“Andrés does not respond to an act of bravery because he is a coward. And he has done it through fear, through management, he is extremely skilled and sensitive in projecting his fear onto others. This lengthy deliberation leads me to only one conclusion: Andrés will have power as long as we hunker down. It’s time to save Mexico,” said Muñoz Ledo.

“Everyone is afraid, he has planted it because there is no law. It is a lawless land. So everyone is afraid,” he said. And he added: “The solution is easy: let’s lose our fear. Cowardice is Andrés’ ally. It is a wonderful transfer: his own cowardice makes it the cowardice of others.

In addition, Muñoz Ledo analyzed that AMLO has entered into a kind of soft socialism, under a scheme of a regime that endorses itself, abusing the fact that it has popular support.

“And it is that the referendum regime is the tomb of democracy, since he said that you can have a majority, but that does not mean that you have a rule of law, and that the referendum regime systematically leads to the daily violation of the rule of law” he declared.

“Our dear friend, Don Andrés says: the law is worth it to me. I’m the justice. It is the motto of the Kukuxklán, revenge by one’s own hand, vendetta. I do justice. Who says that I am justice? Well I. It is the deep contempt for the rule of law. This leads to a transition, towards the form of the dictatorship,” he concluded.

If AMLO’s proposals for secondary laws on electoral matters are finally approved, but that affect constitutionality by making them contradict the Magna Carta, Mexico is one step away from dictatorship, something that has been announced many times, but that would begin to be done in reality.

While this is happening, millions of parishioners congregate this Monday, December 12, at the largest Catholic veneration site in the world, that of the Virgin of Guadalupe on Tepeyac hill. While AMLO divides the country every day, the Virgin unites Mexicans.
