The new president of Peru proposes early elections for April 2024

The new president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, announced on Sunday night that she will present a bill to advance elections to April 2024 in response to the social protests that are taking place in various areas of the country against her government.

“Interpreting the will of the citizenry in the broadest possible way, I have decided to take the initiative to reach an agreement with the Congress of the Republic to advance the General Elections to April 2024,” the president declared in a speech to the nation with reason for the violent demonstrations this weekend that have so far left two dead and several dozen injured.

Thus, the Peruvian president, who took office after the dismissal of Pedro Castillo as established in the country’s Constitution, explained that “in the next few days” she will send a bill to Congress so that it can be “agreed upon with the political forces represented in Parliament.

Boluarte has indicated that the approval of this law implies constitutional reforms, while her cabinet “will also promote the agreement in the Congress of the Republic of a law for the Reform of the Political System.”

“I call on all political forces, from the regions and provinces, the authorities, civil society and the Peruvian people to participate in this process so that a wave of democratic will and national responsibility guides and guides us,” she added.
