Lula da Silva offers Brazil to host COP30

President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT, left) has offered the state of Pará as the next host of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP30, which takes place in 2025, and highlighted the importance of the Amazon rainforest in a speech during COP27 in Egypt.

During the campaign, Lula da Silva promised to reduce rainforest deforestation to zero and protect the indigenous people.

The leftist leader also said he would make voluntary commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In return, he will ask rich nations to donate more funds to protect not only the Amazon, but all remaining rainforests, mainly in Brazil, Indonesia, and the Congo.

A critical step will be the revival of the Amazon Fund maintained by rich nations like Norway and Germany, which was frozen in 2019 when Bolsonaro changed the country’s governance.
