Electoral high court president says those who doubt election results in Brazil will be treated as “criminals”

The president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Alexandre de Moraes, has said that protests against the election results will be “fought with the law,” and those responsible will be punished.

“The elections are over, the second round was democratic. The TSE has declared him [Luiz Lula da Silva] the winner, and he will take office on Jan. 1, 2023,” Moraes said.

He warned that those who “criminally” do not accept the results “will be treated like criminals.”

He praised the “efficiency” of electronic ballot boxes, noting that election authorities had already certified the winning candidate three hours after polls closed.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian president’s chief of staff appointed the future president’s “number two,” Lula da Silva, as special envoy for the change of government, beginning a process that will officially conclude with the handing over of the presidential sash.

Ciro Nogueira, who has been coordinating this process in recent days, met Thursday with Geraldo Alckmin.
