Bolsonaro will not challenge the election result in court

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL, right) will make his 1st public statement after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT, left) is elected the 39th president of the Federative Republic of Brazil this Monday (Oct. 31) or Tuesday (Nov.1).

A defeated candidate for re-election, he isolated himself Sunday night after the results of the 2022 election were announced.

Bolsonaro is working on the text of a formal statement with close allies. The defeated re-election candidate will not do an interview. It will only be a statement.

He has decided not to go to court to contest the election result.

In his statement to the nation, Bolsonaro should only talk about what he considers an unequal game, with many decisions of the Electoral Justice that would have prejudiced him.

According to Poder360, the president estimates that his defeat is mainly due to the loss of votes in São Paulo and also a little in Minas Gerais compared to 2018.

SÃO PAULO WAS DECISIVE

The president received more votes in the Northeast in 2022 in percentage than in 2018.

However, in the Southeast, Bolsonaro still won a clear majority, but not enough.

In 2018, in the so-called “Bermuda Triangle of politics” (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais), the president had 65.5% of the valid votes. Now, it was only 54.1%.

Bolsonaro also says that, in the final stretch, two episodes have hurt him a lot:

  • The leak of a study by the Ministry of Economy saying that the government was considering not giving any more adjustments to the minimum wage;
  • and Roberto Jefferson’s attitude against Federal Police agents.

Bolsonaro tells allies that the episode involving Congresswoman Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) may have damaged the campaign somewhat.

What has already been more than decided: Bolsonaro will not call Lula da Silva.

20 HOURS WITHOUT A STATEMENT

When the result was announced, Bolsonaro secluded himself in the Alvorada Palace.

He asked his allies not to bother him. He refused, for example, to receive Minister Adolfo Sachsida (Mines and Energy) on Sunday (Oct. 30).

Bolsonaro received sons, the aide-de-camp, Mauro Cid, and called the minister of Defense, Paulo Sérgio Nogueira.

He also met with Minister Anderson Torres of Justice and Public Security.

He would not host any congressmen, senators or campaign headquarters members close to him.

At 10:04 pm on Sunday, the lights at Alvorada Palace were turned off.

Journalists from the national and international media waited for the statement from the head of government but were left without Bolsonaro’s speech.

In the call he had with Moraes, the TSE president informed that the Electoral Justice was able to announce who was elected in the election and that he would proclaim the result.

Moraes congratulated them both for their participation in the election.

The minister did not detail if they talked about other subjects. About the call to Bolsonaro, he said that the head of the Executive answered him with “extreme politeness”.

“President Bolsonaro answered me with extreme politeness, thanked me for the call, and that was all. Moraes’ speech about the call to the candidates was made during an interview at the Electoral Court headquarters at the end of the counting of the elections.

With 99.99% of the ballots counted, the TSE system shows Lula with 50.90% (60,343,307 votes). Bolsonaro appears with 49.10% (58,205,269 votes).

Bolsonaro has already said he would respect the result of “clean elections”.

In an interview with Globo network’s Jornal Nacional, he made the statement in late August.

Moraes said he sees “no real risk” of contesting the result of the 2022 elections. “If there are challenges within the rule, they will be analyzed normally.”
