On Tuesday, October 25, the Chilean Government approved a new extension of the state of emergency in the regions of La Araucanía and Biobío for an additional 15 days.
The senators have approved the request of the Executive – represented by the Ministers of Interior and Defense, Carolina Tohá and Maya Fernández, respectively – with 35 votes in favor, one against, and two abstentions, as reported by the Upper House in a statement.
In the debate on the declaration of a state of emergency, the senators have highlighted the decrease in acts of violence in recent months.
However, several legislators have mentioned recent attacks, which is why they consider “the ratified tool” necessary.
Meanwhile, the measure has obtained 113 votes in favor, 19 against, and four abstentions in Congress.
The Government first issued this measure on May 16 of this year, and since then, the Executive has extended the state of exception using decrees.
