Pilots of the Brazilian Azul airline spotted a light of unknown origin on Saturday night, October 22, while flying over Santa Catarina state in the direction of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul state.
It is not the first time that unidentified flying objects (UFOs) have raised theories and many discussions about the phenomena sighted in southern Brazil.
Rio Grande do Sul has 45 occurrences of UFOs that have been seen in Brazilian airspace over the past six decades.
According to 2020 data from the National Archive Information System (Sian) on the Federal Government site, 758 records, including reports, photographs, videos, questionnaires on occurrences, and newspaper and magazine clippings have occurred in the country.
Rio Grande do Sul is the tenth with the most related documentation.
GZH recalls some of the most mysterious and emblematic cases that occur in the South of Brazil:
RIO GRANDE DO SUL – FROM SANTA CATARINA TO PORTO ALEGRE
Two airplanes were chased by mysterious lights, according to reports from 55 years ago in the national circulation magazine O Cruzeiro and the newspaper Diário de Notícias, published in Porto Alegre, as Leandro Staudt’s column recalled in May this year.
The luminous objects were reported by several people, including official testimony from military personnel of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
In Santa Catarina, ten minutes after takeoff from Florianópolis airport, Captain Ronald Eduardo Jaeckel noticed that “there was a very intense light on the right side of the military aircraft”.
It was moving in the same direction as the aircraft, at a slightly higher level and the same speed. Until near Torres, it stayed in the same position until clouds obscured it.
At a certain point in the chase, the UFO went dark. And so the lights were turned on and off again.
After 20 minutes, always ahead of the aircraft, the object made a faster takeoff to get away. In horizontal and vertical movements, it disappeared for good during the night.
PELOTAS (NOVEMBER 18, 1999)
A businessman, 46 years old, sighted and recorded an object of a round shape moving from South to North during an early morning in Pelotas.
According to the report, the unidentified flying object remained stationary in the sky for about 40 minutes. The spherical shape varied between white and yellow colors.
Check out part of the report: “The object was huge (the size of a small soccer stadium) and was moving at a very high speed while emitting white light with yellow hues.
It came from the southern quadrant (relative to the observer) and stopped just to the northeast of the observer.
It stayed there for about 40 minutes, and every now and then, smaller lights (white or yellow) came out and went to the ground.
With the sunlight, according to the reporter, the huge object became invisible and disappeared”.
Although the record in the National Archives reports that there are images of the sighting, they are not available in digital format.
TAPERA (MARCH 19, 1996)
An electrician, 36 years old at the time, and his daughter, ten years old, were traveling from the municipality of Tapera to the countryside when they sighted an oval object at a low altitude, resembling an automobile headlight.
It was moving at different speeds and accompanied the car for 45 minutes. The sky was completely clear, according to the record.
The report pointed out that an excellent-quality film recorded the phenomenon, but it was not made available digitally.
PELOTAS (MARCH 20, 1996)
A doctor, 44 years old at the time, left his house with his family and sighted a round object with concavities to the west of the sky.
The report said it was larger than a star and white. The object was slowly moving horizontally along the horizon line.
For more than an hour he and his family members filmed it. The sky was cloudless.
The object changed color to red and disappeared.
PELOTAS (OCTOBER 5, 1996)
In another case in the city, during a flight in the EMB 712 Tupi airplane, businessman and pilot Haroldo Westendorff observed an object in the shape of a pyramid with rounded ends that rotated around itself without emitting sounds or any smoke.
The event took place over the Patos Lagoon and lasted about 30 minutes.
The sky was partly cloudy; according to the pilot, the flying object was moving slowly toward the Atlantic Ocean.
He approached it from a distance of about 300 meters and saw that the craft was made up of eight sides with projections that appeared to be windows.
Westendorff contacted the Pelotas Airport station by radio and the Air Space Control Center in Curitiba.
After this, the pilot began to circle the craft, and on the second turn, as the report states, the dome opened, and a disc-shaped object, three times the size of an airplane, flew out in a vertical direction, tilted at 45 degrees, and flew rapidly toward the sea.
The craft, in turn, let out reddish flares from the still-open dome and flew away at high speed, disappearing into the sky.
CANOAS (MARCH 5, 2001)
The commander of an aircraft passing by Canoas and heading to Porto Alegre saw a long cylindrical shaped object at about 4:50 PM, hovering in a pendular motion.
The professional found that the UFO was the length of a Boeing 737 and white. The sighting lasted about a minute, and the sky was cloudless.
He reported that the “observation was very clear to the point of motivating him to call to inform the authorities and asked that the name of the company he works for not be involved”.
SANTO ANTÔNIO DA PATRULHA (OCTOBER 6, 2013)
During the late morning hours, a journalist located at Morro da Pedreira, in Santo Antônio da Patrulha, filmed, for seven minutes, a luminous and rounded object, white in color, moving randomly, crossing and grouping into a single focus.
According to the report, the UFO did not emit any sound and was at a distance of about 1,200 meters from the observer.
CIDREIRA GETS UFOLOGY CENTER
Known for UFO sightings, Cidreira, on the North Coast, will gain a Center for Ufological Studies (CEU) in 2021.
Among perfect circles on the beach sand strip and in the countryside, unidentified lights in the sky during the day and at night, and the possibility of a portal between the sea and the lagoon, the phenomena studied by the CEU members have several requests for investigations in the region.
SANTA CATARINA
Besides the unknown apparition in the Santa Catarina sky on Saturday, recorded by pilots of the Azul airline, the State of Santa Catarina recorded other phenomena that drew the population’s attention.
Recently, mysterious drawings appeared on a plantation in the city of Ipuaçu, in the West of the State. Called “agro-glyphs” (crop circles), the perfectly aligned geometric figures attracted many tourists to the place.
These drawings in plantations have been occurring in the city since 2008. There is even a tab on the top bar of the City Hall website called “Municipality”.
There are access options, such as “Agro-glyphs of Ipuaçu”. According to the city’s executive page, “Ipuaçu has become the national capital of agro-glyphs”.
The farmer Sérgio Girotto, a rural producer in Ipuaçu, talked to Gaúcha+ at the beginning of October about the drawings that appeared in the wheat fields in the region. For him, the figures were not made by human hands:
“They are very beautiful drawings, and it was overnight. (To do this) in a wheat field… It’s impossible to come out with such perfection.”
The events appeared in the fields in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2022.
UNKNOWN LIGHTS IN BALNEÁRIO GAIVOTA (JUNE 22, 2020)
In the early morning of June 22, businessman Rudinei Rosa, 41 years old at the time, was driving with his daughter from Torres to Balnerário Gaivota, approximately 40 kilometers from the Rio Grande do Sul beach.
In Passo de Torres, already on Santa Catarina’s soil, the two opted to make the trip on the sand of the beach to reduce travel time.
After walking about two kilometers, the man spotted, on the horizon, towards the sea, a sphere of intense light at a low altitude.
The two were on a totally uninhabited stretch of road with no electricity. The only point of light was coming from the direction of the sphere.
The same unknown light appeared near the seashore between the Torres and Magisterio beaches.
Several residents of the area claimed to have seen the unknown phenomenon and were amazed.
CURITIBA, PARANÁ STATE, (JULY 20, 2014)
In July 2014, a teacher sent images to G1 of mysterious luminous points in the sky of Curitiba, Paraná.
According to him, the objects made contrary movements, stopped, accelerated, and changed direction.
The man stated, at the time, that he did not know if they were UFOs but that he considered what he saw as “something abnormal”.
Editors of UFO Magazine, who specialize in unidentified flying objects, say that the dots are intensely illuminated insects.
Ufologist Ademar José Gevaerd, 58, told a podcast in January 2021 that Curitiba is the official UFO capital of Brazil.
“Curitiba is the official UFO capital of Brazil. It is the capital with the largest number of records made by the Air Force,” said the professor.
