Canadian tourist dies after falling into the Argentine side of the Iguaçú Falls

A tourist from Canada fell into the Iguaçú Falls in Argentina while taking a selfie at around 11 AM local time on Monday, October 17.

The accident occurred on the Argentine side, but the body was found near Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, after more than 24 hours of searching.

According to the Argentine press, the Canadian was 60 and stayed in a hotel in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina.

His body was found near the Tancredo Neves Bridge, which connects the cities of Puerto Iguazú and Foz do Iguaçu.

Witnesses reported that he tried to climb on the protective railing to take a selfie, but lost his balance and fell.

The tourist was on the footbridge of the Bosetti Waterfall. Witnesses reported that he tried to climb on the protective railing to take a selfie, but lost his balance and fell.

Argentine rescue teams immediately began searching, but their work was hampered by the large amounts of water that had recently fallen.

Heavy rains have been falling in the region since last week, and the Iguaçu Falls footbridge in Paraná state, Brazil, was closed for three days last week.

On October 13, the second-highest flow in the history of the falls was recorded.

On that day, the flow reached 16.5 million liters of water per second, 11 times more than the annual average of 1.5 million.
