Brazil’s Week Agenda: Presidential race and GDP forecast

On Monday, October 17, Poder360 selected issues that should mark this week’s political and power agenda in Brazil.

PRESIDENTIAL RACE

The penultimate week before the runoff elections begins. In 13 days, the country will go back to the polls to choose who will be the president of the Republic for the next term: Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers’ Party – PT, left) or Jair Bolsonaro (Liberal Party – PL, right).

Lula da Silva is expected to release a letter to evangelical voters this week.

There is still no consensus in the campaign about sending the text to pastors, and the former president has already spoken out against it.

Allies, however, say that the PT is giving in and the document should be released.

The idea is to show that Lula da Silva has no plans to close churches.

He will remind that he sanctioned the National Day of the March for Jesus in 2009 and created the Evangelicals’ Day in 2010.

The former president will meet with priests and religious people on October 17 in São Paulo.

There are plans to go to Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, and Amazonas.

Bolsonaro will benefit from economic data. The main one will be August IBC-Br (Central Bank Economic Activity Index).

Considered a preview of the GDP, it will be released by the Central Bank (BC) on Monday.

A high is expected. It will be good news for the government, which will be able to reinforce the fact that the country is growing despite the war in Ukraine and the pandemic.

BENEFITS FOR TRUCKERS AND TAXI DRIVERS

On Tuesday, October 18, the 4th installment of the benefits for truckers and taxi drivers, both of R$1,000 (US$188), will be paid.

It has been anticipated by four days. It will be another positive news for Bolsonaro’s advantage.
