Brazil elections 2022: Military will “guarantee” voters wearing green and yellow, says Bolsonaro

On Wednesday, September 28, Brazil’s president and candidate for re-election, Jair Bolsonaro (Liberal Party – PL), said he would determine that the Armed Forces guarantee the vote of voters dressed in green and yellow. He made the statement in an electoral live broadcast.

The head of State quoted a publication that attributed to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) an alleged ban on voters who go to vote wearing the national soccer team’s shirt.

Bolsonaro, then, got angry: “There will be no election in a section that forbids green and yellow,” he said. The Court, in fact, received a proposal to ban the prop to clerks.

"Are you worried about a sea of yellow and green voting and Lula's name appearing as the winner?" asked Bolsonaro.

In his broadcast on Wednesday, Bolsonaro targeted the president of the Superior Electoral Court, Alexandre de Moraes.

“What’s up, Alexandre de Moraes? Prohibit wearing a national team shirt? It is too much interference. What are you afraid of? The sea of green and yellow? Are you worried about a sea of yellow and green voting and Lula’s name appearing as the winner? Is that it, TSE? Is that it?” he said.

The candidate for re-election raised the tone against the president of the TSE also by criticizing Moraes for opening an investigation on the leak of a secret investigation in the presidential office.

“Alexandre, it was you who leaked. Be a man, Alexandre, be a man. Everything you blamed the Federal Police for,” he said.

Bolsonaro did not say where he was broadcasting his live from but cited “huge expense” with the broadcast.

“I’m hiding, doing a live broadcast, an enormous expense considering what I would spend if I were at the Alvorada. The candidates for the São Paulo state government, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), and for the São Paulo Senate, Marcos Pontes (PL), participated.

CRITICISM OF THE POLLS

Bolsonaro said again that he distrusts the auditing of the electronic ballot boxes. He said he recorded his meeting with former Paraguayan Chancellor Rubén Ramírez Lezcano, head of the OAS (Organization of American States) mission to observe the electoral process, and asked the man in charge for a report to say that the devices are not auditable.

“A hypothetical case: someone says that there was a fraud. What will you do to say that there was no fraud or that there was a fraud?” Bolsonaro asked and continued:

“Make a preliminary report, signed by your technicians, because, if someone questions the legitimacy [of the election], you will write in advance that the ballot boxes are impossible to audit. I asked him for this in the name of democracy, transparency, and the Paraguayan people.

Hours earlier, the TSE said in a statement that the questions about the ballot box security made by President Jair Bolsonaro’s party are lies and seek to “disrupt the electoral process” and undermine the democratic rule of law.

Moraes also ordered that the case be investigated in the fake news inquiry, which is underway in the Supreme Court.
