Two Slovakian tourists beaten during robbery in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro

On Wednesday morning, September 21, two minors beat two Slovakian tourists during a robbery on Copacabana Beach, South Zone of Rio de Janeiro.

The women were quite injured; one even had a fractured face. They were treated at the Copacabana Emergency Care Unit (UPA) and taken to Hospital Municipal Miguel Couto in Leblon.

“It was a horrible crime, a robbery. The two tourists are in a group on tour, where they met. They went to the beach early in the morning to see the sunrise. That’s when they were approached by the two minors asking for money.

“They didn’t give them the money, so they punched the victims,” said police officer Patricia Alemany from the Special Police Department for Tourism Support (Deat).

The tourists are on tour and arrived in Rio on Sunday, September 18. According to the delegate, the minors have lengthy criminal records, with several tickets for robbery, theft, and threats.

The crime happened on the beach sand, and the minors were arrested on Atlântica Avenue, at Rua Hilário de Gouveia, while trying to escape. They were taken to the 12th Police Station (Copacabana).

State police officers recovered the cell phone that had been stolen.
