Brazil can harvest record wheat with a crop of nearly 11 million tons

The Brazilian production of wheat should total a record 11 million tons in 2022, pointed out the Safras & Mercado consultancy on September 21, which raised expectations by more than 400,000 tons compared with the previous projection, according to a statement.

The harvest is under development in parts of the country, including Paraná state, one of the largest national producers.

Brazil has increased wheat planting this season amid good prices, and the weather has been favorable so far.

“The readjustment considers increased expectations for Paraná, São Paulo, Goiás, Federal District, and Bahia. It should be the largest harvest in history, surpassing the previous record of 7.8 million tons in 2021 by 41.2%,” Safras said.

Paraná should be the second-largest producing state this season, with 4.2 million tons, versus 3.9 million in the previous projection.

The advance of the harvest in the west and north regions of Paraná and the conditions of the other crops allowed for an increase in the forecast said Safras.

The numbers for Rio Grande do Sul (the largest national producer), Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, and Mato Grosso do Sul were maintained.

Rio Grande do Sul should produce 5.1 million tons.

The area planted with wheat in Brazil totals 3.2 million hectares, up 17.6% compared to 2021, said the consulting firm.

Productivity should also increase, reaching 3.41 tons per hectare, compared to 2.84 tons per hectare last year.
