Image of Brazilian Supreme Court worse than ever

The Brazilian Supreme Court’s (STF) image has further deteriorated in the last three months, according to a PoderData poll conducted September 11-13, 2022.

Today, 46% of Brazilian voters rate the Court’s work as “bad” or “terrible.” The rate has increased by 5 percentage points since June.

The share of those who think the STFs work is “good” or “great” has remained at 24% over the same period.

The survey provides a snapshot of the Supreme Court’s views at a time when the Court is changing its president.

On Monday (Sept. 12), while the poll was being conducted, Secretary Rosa Weber took office as president of the STF.

Weber has a discreet profile but assumes the presidency during institutional tension.

STF IS ACTIVIST AND NO LONGER NEUTRAL

A large part of the population has long accused the Brazilian Supreme Court of abandoning its role as a neutral and impartial institution and becoming a de facto extension of the Brazilian opposition.

Since Jair Bolsonaro came to power, it has become the country’s biggest troublemaker, failing to keep institutional conflicts between the powers under control and instead sparking them in the first place.

That is why Bolsonaro said in February Brazil lives a “dictatorship that comes by the pens”, an assessment shared by many Brazilians.
