Unicamp announces suspension of mandatory mask use starting Sept. 20

The State University of Campinas Unicamp announced Monday (12) that from Sept. 20, it would suspend the mandatory use of masks as a protective measure against Covid-19 indoors in universities and colleges.

Despite the decision, the university continues to recommend the use of protective equipment, especially for people who are 60 years or older, have comorbidities, are immunocompromised, or have respiratory problems.

The measure does not change the protocol in health care settings, such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, clinics, and health posts, which continue to require mask use.

According to the coordinator general, the decision to suspend the mask requirement came after a “steady decline in the number of Covid 19 cases and deaths caused by the disease throughout São Paulo.

VACCINATION

From the release of the mask in internal environments, which had been in force for two years and four months, the Unicamp will launch a campaign for servers and students to update data related to booster doses of the vaccine against Covid-19 in internal records.

According to Maria Luiza Moretti, Unicamp’s general coordinator, more than 90% of students at the university have been vaccinated with the first two doses.

Still, the rate is lower regarding the third and fourth doses of the vaccine – about 70% of servers reported having taken the booster doses, while the rate for students is 35%.
