The shipwreck occurred in the morning in the Bay of Marajó, which is part of the Amazon Delta and includes the metropolitan region of Belém.

The boat was traveling between the city of Camará and the capital and sank near an island for unknown reasons.

Images circulating on social media, taken by a passenger, show water entering the boat.

The Navy says it will investigate the wreck.

According to survivors, the propeller suddenly stopped, and the boat slowly sank into the water.

The Agency for the Regulation and Control of Public Services of the State of Pará (Arcon) reported that the company that owned the vessel did not have a permit for inter-municipal passenger transport and was leaving an illegal port.
