Some say fuel prices in Paraguay are high for lacking refineries

Victorio Oxilia, professor and researcher, stated that the regulation of fuel prices in Paraguay does not occur because it is a price taker and does not have a refinery.

He explained that the situation is changing in the sector because Russia has international sanctions due to its conflict with Ukraine.

Oxilia explained that, since it does not produce oil, Paraguay depends on the international situation, which is still in suspense due to what is happening in Europe.

He said that the United States is selling fuel to many nations, which affects the domestic market because this is where the sector’s supply comes from.

He clarified that in the international market, there is a difference between the prices of the oil barrel and the derived products (gasoline and diesel, among others).

Another cause that makes it impossible for the country to regulate sales is that it does not have a refinery, which could be alleviated with its production systems for more equitable distribution.
